Minimum Wage Rate to Increase

By: Craig Rogers

Employees are smiling, employers not so much, as many states are scheduled to raise their minimum wage rate on January 1st. While the Federal minimum wage rate is $7.25, if a states minimum wage is higher than the Federal rate, the employer is obligated to pay the higher rate. Two states are scheduled to increase effective December 31,2014. They are New York and West Virginia, increasing to $8.75 and $8.00 respectively. The six states scheduled to increase on January 1, 2015 are Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont, with Connecticut and Vermont having the highest minimum wage at $9.15. By July 1, 2015 there will be three more increases, including Delaware, District of Columbia and Maryland. The District of Columbia will rise to $10.25. Many states have automated indexed increases scheduled for the coming few years, among those are Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, and Washington. We will update you with any other state increases as they become enacted.
